  • Founded in 1945, the United Nations, is an international organization that has succeeded to the society of nations, whose purpose is to ensure international peace and security. It facilitates cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights.

    There are currently 192 member states. Its headquarters is situated on international territory in New York in the USA. UN is headed by a secretary-general, elected for 5 years, Ban Kimoon of South Korea, who has premplaced Kofi Annan in January 2007.

    The United Nations is divided into six primary bodies:

    • The General Assembly where every member states are represented
    • The Security Council that decides certain resolutions for peace and security
    • The Economic and Social Council assists in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development
    • The Secretariat which manages the UN from hand to mouth
    • The International Court of Justice that is the primary judicial organ

    The organization is financed from assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states.
